cTOM (Computerised Theory of Mind) is a free cognitive task that can be used in basic psychological research to examine social cognition using dynamic colour videos of actors and touch-screen controls.

Please note that cTOM is strictly for research purposes only and data created by the task are not in any way informative for individuals.

cTOM comprises two tasks. cTOM Gaze examines eye gaze discrimination using videos of actors making eye movements. cTOM Stories presents short videos of simple stories featuring two characters interacting. Users are asked questions about the perspective of one of the characters.

Task instructions and questions are presented both as text appearing on the screen and simultaneously as audio.

Users can create multiple password-protected Administrator accounts on the app for administering tests to research participants, and the Subject ID, age, gender, accuracy, and reaction time data for multiple participants can be saved on the app. Data generated on the app can then be securely emailed to an email address of the user’s choice for saving on a personal computer and statistical analysis.

cTOM is available in English and designed for use on iPad and/or iPad mini and Requires iOS 13.0 or later.

cTOM app design was carried out by Dr. David Mothersill, Department of Psychology, School of Business, National College of Ireland, and School of Psychology, National University of Ireland Galway, and Prof. Gary Donohoe, School of Psychology, National University of Ireland Galway.
